Weekend Workshop Round Table Talks

As part of this year’s Photojournalism Weekend Workshop, we’re going to have a few informal round-table discussions on issues the editors and our students are wrestling with. The schedule is below and all of these will be held in the Photojournalism Lab (room 130 of Grady College).

If you’re around and want to sit in, you’re more than welcome to join us. Each of these will run about 30 minutes.

If you’re coming to the Saturday or Sunday talks, I’ll be at the first floor, south west corner door about 10 minutes prior to the start to let folks in. (That’s the door closest to Tate Center with the automatic opener on it.)

Friday, 1 p.m. - Using "Social Media" to Build Communities - How do sites like Facebook affect our readership? How can we take advantage of those communities? Do we need to draw readers to our sites or do we go to where the readers are?

Friday, 4 p.m. - Communities Without Borders - How do you make coverage decisions when geography isn't as strong of a defining value? Do we need to redefine "community journalism?"

Saturday, 1 p.m. - Back Pack Journalism - It’s spreading, does it work? Can it work? Do concerns about quality and depth trump the immediacy of it?

Saturday, 4 p.m. - The Role of Video - How important is this? Do we use it because we have it or do we use it when it works best?

Sunday, 10 a.m. - How to Survive - It has been a brutal year in the journalism realm, so how do students keep hope alive? Or should they?

Chris Weston, managing editor at the Greenville (S.C.) News, will be doing a talk on "Transforming Newsrooms Amid Disruptive Innovations." It'll be in the Drewry Room on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 12:15. See Sophie Barnes in room 233 by Tuesday so you can get free pizza.

Weston is a good friend to Grady and a guy who has an excellent grasp on how journalism is changing and needs to change to survive. Highly recommend you get to this.

Local Speaker: Jim Fiscus

FYI ...

This Thursday, August 28th, the featured speaker in ADPR 3150 will be
advertising and editorial photographer Jim Fiscus. If you've been to the
National, you might have seen Jim's portrait of the hip hop band Outkast in the
bar (terrific photo!).

We'll meet at 6 p.m. in room 248 of the SLC. Here's a bit more info about Jim
Fiscus:

In 15 years of shooting Jim Fiscus has shot campaigns for Levis, Nike, HBO, and
many others. He was voted International Photographer of the Year for 2006. His
work was featured on two Communication Arts covers, and named #1 on
Campaigns 2008 list of top photographers in the United Kingdom. Jim Fiscus
lives and works from Athens, GA.

Kael Alford on Campus - April 24 - ROOM CHANGE

Mark this on your calendar - photojournalist Kael Alford will be speaking at the Student Learning Center (room 248 - changed room) on Thursday, April 24 at 4:30 p.m. Her work from Iraq was featured in the Georgia Review magazine last year.

UGAzine Looking for Photo Stories

Passing along ...

Each semester, ugazine publishes a two-page, color Photo Essay for the
department "In A Thousand Words." All submissions will be reviewed by our
Photo Editor, Editor-In-Chief and Managing Editor. If your work is selected for
publication, then you'll be asked to submit a brief (2-3 sentence) summary
paragraph of the story to accompany the photos and captions.
To submit your work, please burn 8-10 high resolution (minimum 300 DPI) JPEG
images with the captions included in the photo information area to a CD or
DVD. Please write in Sharpie on the CD your name, e-mail address and cell
phone number. Also, print out a word document with all your contact
information and the photo numbers with their corresponding captions. Attach
the CD to the sheet of paper and place in the ugazine box in Sophie Barnes'
office (aside Kent Middleton's office) by the last day of spring classes.

REPOST: "Breaking News" - Lecture TODAY

This morning, I filled the Drewry Room with an exhibition from the Associated Press that looks at their history. Tied into their book "Breaking News: How the Associated Press has Covered War, Peace and Everything Else," the show will be up until Friday, February 29.

Additionally, at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, Michael Giarrusso, the AP's Regional News Director for the South and a Grady alum, will given an open talk with Prof. Conrad Fink about where the AP has been and where it's going.

The exhibition and the talk are open to everyone, please swing through and take a look.

Speaker: Dennis Dimick, Thursday, Jan. 31

Dennis Dimick, executive editor at National Geographic, will be in the photo lab from 11 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursday, talking about environmental coverage. All are welcome. 

This precedes his Charter lecture in the afternoon.

Guest Speaker Jim Stovall - Thursday, Jan. 24, 11 a.m.

Professor Jim Stovall will describe the Tennessee Journalist, the student news web site he created at the University of Tennessee. Prof. Stovall was the brainchild behind Dateline Alabama and runs JProf.com, as well. He'll be here to talk with us about student news web sites and is a jack-of-all-codes, so to speak, and can help us think about what we're doing in the Multimedia Journalism class.

This will be open to all students so invite friends from other areas. Please drop me a note if you're coming.

One of the Advanced Photojournalism students, Richard Hamm, pointed out that Clarke County police, fire and emergency medical services, as well as University of Georgia campus police, have their radio traffic broadcast on the web through ScanAthens.com.

Looks like you can have it fed into iTunes, a Real Audio player, Windows Media player and a few others.

Dan Goslee, an emerging specialist in Telecine and Digital Imaging will visit Grady College November 14 - 16th. Dan will give a short lecture/demo on Wednesday, November 14th in Room 214 of the SLC from 4:30pm - 6pm.

Worth exploring.

Motion Graphics Talk - Wednesday Night

From David Hazinski in Broadcast, something to think about going to. Meaning, GO!!

Motion graphics workshop Wednesday night in the photo lab, room 130. Unless we get too many people, then we'll probably move to the newsroom.

My classes had asked for 'more' on motion graphics, so I set this up... then invited Mark Wright. Mark has been the chief graphics designer for CNN. He now holds the same job at CNN International. Runs a crew of about a dozen folks I think who create all the graphics for them and is also responsible for creating the new, clean look they've had for about nine months. Mark says he's also bring a UGA grad who works for him, but I don't know who he or she is.

The original idea was to give students some "hands on" in creating simple screen grabs, backgrounds and "read on" full screens. It will also now morph to whatever Mark wants to explain and as much hands on as we can accomplish.

"Media & Public Life" lecture - TODAY

The Peabody Awards will present its inaugural Peabody-Smithgall Lecture on the theme of "The Media and Public Life" at 4 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, in the University of Georgia Chapel. Author and journalism professor Michael Schudson will be the first speaker at what is scheduled to become an annual event.

His lecture will focus on the news media, but he will also comment on universities, think tanks, the research, information and investigation capabilities of government agencies, and the openness of legislatures themselves to public and media scrutiny. A primary concern will be the re-configuration of informational sources in public life over the past 30-40 years. His specific topic will be "Moderating the Conversation of Democracy."

Should be worth a listen. (Thursday's class will wrap up early enough to get over to the chapel.)

FREE PIZZA - And Pictures of Bugs

How can you pass up that combination? You can't, you just can't ...

On Friday, November 2, Professor G. Keith Douce from the Department of Entomology on the Tifton campus, will be in the Photojournalism Lab at noon to talk about the Bugwood Network - an image archive of pests, plants and problems around the world. The photo archive is impressive - more than 60,000 images that can help you identify flora and fauna.

Prof. Douce will talk about where the photos come from, how they're used, how you can contribute to the archive and how a publicly accessible archive of this size is managed.

This is open to everyone, student and non-student, but please let me know (through the comments below) if you're coming so I can order enough food.

UGA Magazine Club

Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. – The Magazine Club is having a meeting and Kelly Simmons, editor of Georgia Magazine, is coming to chat with us. It's 6:30 in Journalism 505. Georgia Magazine is looking for freelance writers, so this could be a good opportunity to get some clips, as well as network and get career advice.

Show runs through Sept. 28, I'm going to wander over there soon ...

Starry Community

This has almost - almost - nothing to do with photojournalism, but it's kind of cool ...

According to a story in this morning's Athens Banner-Herald, there's a new community forming in Taliaferro County. Themed communities are nothing new (look at golf or motor racing developments around courses), but this one is somewhat unique - it is focused on astronomy. Located on a hill 40 miles southeast of Athens, the 10 acre plot has one unique feature - a lack of light pollution.

John Harrington Speaking in Atlanta

John Harrington is, by far, the leading speaker on how to survive and thrive as a freelancer right now. I've seen his presentation in a few places and come away with a tremendous amount of new info every time.

He'll be in Atlanta on Monday, Sept. 17 and you MOST DEFINITELY SHOULD GO. There's not many things that will affect your future as a photojournalist as much as how you set up and run your business. Get there, learn, then come back and share.

(UGA students should know we may have some secret funding to offset your fuel costs. HINT HINT.)

NPPA Region 6 Regional Director's Tour

Bob Carey, the new R6 Regional Director for the National Press Photographers Association, will be in Atlanta on Monday, May 14 for a chat session. He's touring the region to see what members want and/or need out of the NPPA.
