Women in Photojournalism Call for Entries
Juried Exhibit and Gallery Reception Information

There are no categories, only your interpretation of the theme, "Celebrating Our Past Looking, Towards the Future". Your photographs can represent your definition of the theme through people, place, action or event milestone. Submissions must be by women photojournalists. Single entries only.

Photos must have been taken between July 1, 2008 and April 25, 2009.

Deadline for entry is Midnight, May 1, 2009.

Up to 50 winning images will be selected by judges, including up to 2 best of show. Winners will be contacted and asked to submit an exhibit quality 14x18 matted print for the opening reception June 11, 2009. Copyright holders retain rights to the photograph. NPPA will have the right to print winners in the magazine or on the official website for conference or promotional materials.

~SUBMITTING YOUR PHOTOS~
You can submit by clicking here or going to the Convergence09 page and clicking on the link to enter the Women in Photojournalism Contest. Once you click the contest link and login it will automatically take to you to the entry form. Enter info in each field, then hit the browse button and select image from your computer. When done hit "Submit." You must do this for each photograph you want to enter. Files need to be 200-300 dpi, jpeg files and Include the following information under the Photoshop FILE INFO or IPTC fields for each image: 1) Caption Field: image title followed by complete caption (DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME HERE). 2) Caption Writer: your initials. 3) Headline: image title. 4) Byline: photographer’s name. 5) Credit: your affiliation or school. 6) Source: copyright holder.

Grants for Good

Getty Images has posted info on their latest Grants for Good competition. The cash awards are "two annual grants of $15,000 to cover photographers’ costs as they create compelling new imagery for the nonprofit of their choice."

UGA PJer Takes the Nikon Shootout

For the second time in three years, a UGA-trained photojournalist has won the Nikon Shootout at the Southern Short Course in News Photography. Josh Weiss, a 2008 graduate, won the live-shooting competition this past weekend in Charlotte. (Kelly Wegel won it in 2007.)

Weiss is currently on staff at the Gwinnett Daily Post. 

Alexia Foundation Competition

It's time to start pulling your portfolio together and getting your writing chops worked out. This is an excellent competition - I know, because I worked with the Alexia Foundation for several years.

Study photojournalism in London Alexia Scholarship pays all tuition for fall semester at Syracuse University London Centre in England

Application deadline is Feb. 1, 2009.


An all-tuition scholarship to study photojournalism for a semester in London, plus a $1000 cash grant is available for the first place winner of the Alexia Foundation Scholarship and Grant Competition.

Four more awards provide partial scholarships and $500 cash grants. Scholarships are for studying photojournalism at the Syracuse University London Center in the Fall of 2009. The cash grants are given whether or not the scholarships are used, and are to be used to help produce the project that is proposed as part of the application.

All students are eligible, graduate and undergrad, as long as you don’t have more than three internships or the equivalent of a year’s professional experience.

The application process is online at the website and is simple. Submit a story proposal (no more than 750 words), your portfolio (no more than 20 pictures) and a resume.

The competition rules are the same for graduates and undergrads, but the scholarship program is different for undergrads than for winners who are matriculated grad students or are now graduating seniors. Be sure to select link to the proper information at the website under the “Awards” heading in the student rules.

The London Experience is the highlight of a photographer's education at Syracuse University. Limited to 15 juniors, seniors, and graduate students, the London photography program offers a focused study of photography with one course covering picture essays and documentary photography. A second course, Visual Issues in the Media, includes lectures by British newspaper and wire service photographers and by American photographers on assignment in London; field trips to places such as the Royal Photographic Society, the photography departments of Reuters News Services and the Associated Press; and visit to sites such as the Photographers’ Gallery.

In addition to the two required photography courses, a wide range of liberal arts courses, including comparative politics, British history, and English literature are available to complete the course load for undergraduates. UGA PJ Takes Second Place in NPPA R6 Clip Contest

Our own Daniel Shirey took second place in the National Press Photographers Association's Region Six Monthly Clip Contest for his photo of Knowshon Moreno leaping earlier this year.

YouTube Tries Journalism ... Again

Google and YouTube have announced a video journalism contest, co-sponsored by the Pulitzer Center and Sony. First prize is a Sony VAIO laptop and $10,000 to do another story.

There are some flaws in the plan, but this may be the start of Google (who owns YouTube) pushing into the concept of  "citizen journalism."

College Photographer of the Year Competition

Get your entries together ...

College Photographer of the Year is now accepting student entries for the 63rd annual competition.

As the contest is now completely electronic and there is no longer a printed call for entry for us to send you for distribution to your students, you should have found or will shortly find a postcard in your mailboxes encouraging you to direct students to www.cpoy.org where they can find the entry form and complete instructions on how to prepare and upload images
files as well as read about the awards, the rules and the category definitions.

Entry is free again this year thanks to Nikon Inc. and the deadline is Sept. 26, 2008.

The contest will be judged on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia, Nov. 10-15. Judging is open and you and your students are invited to attend.

World Nomad Photo Competition

It says you can join a National Geographic photographer in Australia ...

Fine print is a little, well, odd ... seems you need to fly yourself there and they'll fly you back. Not sure on that, though.

Society of Professional Journalists' Regional Award Winners

Hmmm ... let's see ... there are 14 teaching members of the journalism faculty here, one of whom teaches photojournalism. At the Society of Professional Journalists' regional award ceremony, the Red & Black won 16 awards this year (scroll down to the second editorial) ... seven of them for photography.

Pictures of the Year International Award Winners

They've announced who's won, but haven't posted the photos yet. Keep checking, this, and the National Press Photographers Association's Best of Photojournalism competition, are always great resources for studying where our industry is.

5th Annual Gordon Parks Celebration of Culture & Diversity

Legendary photojournalist Gordon Parks's is remembered through a competition and a workshop in Fort Scott, Kansas, each year. If you're headed towards Kansas in October, may be worth checking out.

Hearst Competition

Next category for the Hearst Photojournalism Award is Picture Story/Series. Look at what you've shot since September 1, 2006 (not 2007, 2006) and see if you've got a killer story. I know some of you do. Bring it to me on CD by noon on March 1.

We can send two in for judging, so get me this stuff ASAP.

White House News Photograhers Association Student Photographer of the Year Contest

(That may be the longest title I've written for a post.)

The White House News Photographers Association has announced their 2008 student contest. Entries need to be submitted between February 1, 2008 and 11:59 p.m. on March 1, 2008. (That's specific.)

Info is on their web site. Winners will get a $1000 scholarship, two tickets to the black tie gala in D.C. and have their work in the annual book, "Eyes of History." (There is an entry fee of $25.)

Get your stuff together.

South Carolina News Photographers Association Conference - Feb. 9-10

The SCNPA is having their judging and conference next week in Anderson, S.C. That's about a 90 minute drive, a great opportunity to meet some folks who can get you jobs. 

Why wouldn't you take a Saturday and/or Sunday drive?

Alexia Foundation for World Peace Competition

Many of you know of this as I've spoken of it often, but here's a reminder to get your proposal together and get it in:

The Alexia Foundation for World Peace's annual competition is now accepting entries. The student deadline has been extended to February 6, 2008. You need a written proposal for a story that addresses the issues the foundation is interested in (world peace and cultural understanding) as well as a portfolio. All submissions are done online.

This is a unique competition as the proposal is the main determinant for the winners. Judges read the proposals prior to looking at the portfolios. If the proposal is liked, the portfolio is used to determine whether the photographer could carry it out.

There are student and professional awards. For the students, first place is a semester in London with Syracuse University's photojournalism program and $1,000 cash to put towards your story. For the professionals, it's a $15,000 grant to do the proposed story.

More info, and entry requirements, are on the Alexia web site. This is one of those very special competitions, both for what it does and why it exists. It costs you nothing to enter, so why wouldn't you?

Entries are now being accepted for the National Press Photographers Association's Best of Photojournalism competition. There is no entry fee. So why wouldn't you enter?

Carolina Sports Photojournalism Workshop

This has been sitting on my to-post list for a while, but back in November, the University of North Carolina hosted a sports photojournalism workshop. Images from the weekend are posted online for your perusal.

Additionally, they have a blog where they're posting content from class shoot-offs. I like this idea and, if there's interest, think we'll incorporate it into this blog for the spring semester. Let me ruminate on that idea for a few days, but if you have thoughts, let me know.

(This idea has been bounced around before, so it's not new, I just never did anything with it. VERY OPEN to ideas here - weekly themes? Monthly themes? Prizes?)
